Akame ga Kill Episode 1 – First Impressions

It’s been quite a busy weekend for me. I didn’t realize how many series were airing in the past few days but I’ve finally caught up now! The third summer 2014 anime I decided to do individual write-ups on is Akame ga Kill! I had heard a lot of great things about this series which got me hyped up when it was first announced. Anyways, let’s get into my first impressions on Akame ga Kill!

Akame ga Kill anime review

When I first heard of the series, I was under the impression it’d be dark and violent. The art itself didn’t seem to fit what I had in mind as it felt a bit bland to me. On top of that, the comedy/silliness of the MC threw me off a bit as well. It just felt like a typical adventure story where the MC sets off from his village and goes on a quest. However, by the end of the episode, we get to see how brutal the world actually is.

Akame ga kill tatsumi

Tatsumi starts off his journey with big dreams. A small town country boy wanting to make it big in the city. He runs into a rude awakening though once making it into the city. Back in the countryside, everyone knows each other and it’s easy to trust people. This makes them such easy prey to the city folk. Leone easily swindles him out of his money thanks to his naivety. He also blindly believes that Aria is helping him out of the good of her heart.

Akame ga Kill Aria Leone

While foreshadowing was there, Aria’s character was actually likeable for me at the start. She seemed like a normal person who liked to help others. But then again, that’s also a common characteristic among psychopaths since it’s hard to gain people’s trust otherwise. I actually felt sympathy for her character as well up until her secret was revealed. I loved how they showed her true nature as it made me lose all sympathy for her within an instant like Tatsumi did. He defended her from Night Raid, but the second he realized what she did, he didn’t hesitate. It didn’t matter what Aria “did for him”, once he saw who she really was he took away all emotional attachment for her and got retribution.

In this world, connections and money will allow you to do do whatever you want. When you’re poor, you’re able to appreciate the little things in life. However, Aria’s family had both power and money which made them seek thrills by abusing their power.

Now that Tatsumi’s dream has been shattered, he has to choose a new path. He wanted to make it big in the city with his friends. Now that he’s seen the truth of the capital and lost his ties back to the village, his dream is practically dead. Night Raid decides to take him under their wing though which leads into a whole new adventure.

Overall, I thought that this was a strong episode to start off the series. I’m glad that it wasn’t heavily censored like many had feared. I enjoyed the comedic aspect since it kept me entertained throughout the less action packed moments. While Tatsumi venturing off to the capital was the beginning of the series, the real story is just beginning now that he’s seen what the world is really like.

So, there’s my thoughts on Akame ga Kill so far. I’m curious what you guys thought of the adaptation so feel free to leave a comment!
