Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Episode 14 – Thoughts

It’s taken 14 long episodes, but I’m actually starting to get excited for this series. The new OP had a lot more action in it which makes me hopeful for the rest of the series. We’ve primarily been focusing on the school aspect of Mahouka but it’s been established that there are a lot of different political and social aspects involved. I’m hoping to see these students being thrown into the real world and how they’ll have to fend for themselves.

Mahouka impressions Shizuku vs miyuki

They really picked up the pace this episode by finishing up the rest of the competitions. Honoka is able to win thanks to Tatsuya predicting her opponents’ trying to counter her old trick. Shizuku felt confident in her abilities (thanks to Tatsuya) and faced off against Miyuki in the finals. She quickly gets hit with the harsh reality that some people are just naturally better than you are. Despite Tatsuya optimizing her performance, Miyuki is naturally gifted and crushes her in the finals. Lastly, Morisaki gets sabotaged in his competition (offscreen) by the same group who sabotaged Mari.

Even though Masaki confronted Tatsuya last week, the situation just fizzled out. I was kind of expecting some kind of confrontation, but instead, it just results in Tatsuya being aware of their presence. Even Tatsuya fears George and Masaki to an extent. These two are in a similar position as himself. They have real world experience and are well respected and feared by everyone. Perhaps these two will actually be able to put up a decent fight against Tatsuya.

The end of the episode is what has me excited the most. Tatsuya is finally being thrown into the front lines and is competing in the Monolith Code. He’s hesitant at first since he believes that other students would be upset that they weren’t chosen as substitutes when they’re technically more qualified. Juumonji reassures him and gives him a lecture on his “duty” to the team. He chooses Mikihiko and Leonhard as his teammates for the event, both being “weeds”. This is an interesting set up now since they’ll be competing against Masaki and George who are considered top class. It’s an opportunity to show the world that weeds are on par with the blooms.
