Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Episode 9 – Thoughts

I think at this point, I’m enjoying the witty comments people make about the show rather than the series itself. Things just seem to be progressing very slowly considering how long the first arc was. The second arc seems to be on pace to be just as long. There’s a lot of unneeded fluff throughout the episodes which makes everything drag on.  I don’t mind the comedic moments so much. However, I find the long scientific explanation of magic concepts/spells to be over the top.

Mahouka Miyuki Tatsuya flying

Tatsuya continues to be Tatsuya by “revealing” that he is also the great Taurus Silver that was praised in the previous episode. They’ve introduced a lot of Tatsuya’s “other” acquaintances at this point (his teacher, engineering partner, and secret operations) but have yet to tie everything together. I’m finding it difficult to get mentally involved in this series due to how many characters they’ve introduced at this point. It also doesn’t help that Tatsuya is a rather one dimensional character as well.

Miyuki Angry Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei episode 9

It seems that Tatsuya isn’t looked too highly upon within the Yotsuba family. The whole encounter with the butler seemed to be a bit awkward. The main purpose of the conversation was to tell the viewer more information regarding their family. The entire dialogue just felt unnatural given that the butler was likely aware of the situation (considering how closely he works for the family). The one thing that did pique my interest in the encounter was their father. He didn’t have any words to say to his children until their mother was brought up. From his manner of speaking, he seems rather plain and void of emotions, similar to Tatsuya.

Saegusa Mayumi

Aside from that, there wasn’t much else to the episode. The ending did show how smooth Tatsuya is with the ladies though. Playing off Saegusa’s advances and getting out of that as quick as possible. Miyuki is also just a tad bitter about Tatsuya’s treatment. Apparently standing outside is considered harsh treatment in her eyes. However, the other girls seem to think Tatsuya is amazing for being able to complete his duty from start to finish. Thankfully, their bus gets attacked which means we’ll likely be getting into some action in the next episode. Hopefully I’ll have more of an opinion on the future episodes but as it currently stands, there isn’t much to discuss about this series in my opinion.

  1. Since this series is based on Light Novels, I guess, the pacing-problems come from each story-arc covering a hundred pages or so. If aynthing, the director of this series is to blame for not cutting short a lot of what happened in this episode and the last one. It’s already mindboggling to watch just how much this series adores Tatsuya… I mean, for fuck’s sake, his little sister is even constantly present to put the adoration into words as if all the rest of the story isn’t obvious enough regarding that. And since it’s that blatantly delivered this whole shtick is getting old pretty fast and this episode really felt a bit monotonous. It’s really unclear where the dramatic conflict is supposed to be that anyone should give a shit about considering how amazing Tatsuya is. If anything, any somewhat negative event is just preparation for another opportunity to show how awesome Tatsuya is.

But personally I do like watching a series that’s SO in love with its main-character while seemingly being completely unaware of how bonkers the whole thing is.

    1. You’ve brought up a good point on the pacing issue. I actually was getting a bit tired of the slow progression and read some details/spoilers on the characters. What I read actually made me think “damn, that’s actually pretty interesting” (regarding Tatsuya’s character). However, from what the anime has shown so far, I wouldn’t have guessed that there’s more to Tatsuya’s character besides being the almighty savior.

I do find it pretty entertaining overall though, especially when it’s not looked into too deeply. Who knows, this could be similar to Tokyo Ravens (which I loved) and pull off a silly first half and intense second half!
