Well, the spring season is about to come to a close, which means its time for the summer 2015 anime season to kick off!
We still have a couple of great shows that will be carrying over from the spring season, such as Ore Monogatari, Shokugeki no Souma and Arslan Senki. While I’m a bit sad to see the season come to an end, it’s always exciting when a fresh new season of anime is about to begin.
Summer 2015 Anime Preview
For the most part, I’m going into this season pretty blind. I haven’t had as much free time to research into the series so I’ll probably watch a couple episodes of everything and naturally drop a few series that don’t catch my attention.
Akagami no Shirayuki-hime
I’m picking up this series since I skipped out on Akatsuki no Yona, which I heard was amazing. Not sure if I’m interested in a historical shoujo, but the source seems to be well received.
Aoharu x Kikanjuu
It’s hard to get an idea of what this series will be about based on the synopsis. Survival games are always fun though, and with Matsuoka Yoshitsugu voicing the main role, I can see it being a fun and over the top series.
I’m a bit conflicted with Charlotte. It’s made by Key, which I find to be a hit or a miss. I loved some of their series like Angel Beats, and parts of Clannad, but then there were others which I dreaded (Little Busters). I find that their drama can be a bit over the top and forced at times just for the sake of trying to get their audience to cry. Hopefully Charlotte will be able to strike the right balance with me and not feel like non stop sadness.
Dragon Ball Chou
Maybe I’m in the minority where I actually thought GT was okay… but then again, I watched it when I was a kid and anything was amazing to me back then. Anyways, it’s always a love hate relationship when I see these childhood series being brought back. On one hand, I’m satisfied with how things ended, on the other it’s always nostalgic to see them again. Hopefully Chou does the series justice and doesn’t disappoint like GT did for many!
Not much to say about this one. If you’re a fan of Durarara, you’re probably picking this up to continue the series. I’m hoping that the animation is better this season though since there were noticeable dips during the last one. Either way, I still look forward to continuing the Durarara story, especially with how Mikaido has progressed as a character over the course of the series.
Fate Illya 2wei Herz
Fate Stay Night just ended, and poor Illya didn’t have such a great time in that show. At least now she’s the main heroine and gets to wear her cute magical girl outfit! This is a continuation of the second season of Fate Illya. Last season was pretty fan servicey but it still had its more heartfelt moments with Kuro.
This has to be one of my most anticipated series. While it’s fun to watch all sorts of crazy stories through the anime medium, sometimes its the dark, gritty, and somewhat realistic series that really catch my eye. Gangsta seems to be based around the shady part of town where crime and gangs are the norm. I can see this series being in the running for one of the top anime of summer 2015 based on the animation style and the scenes in the OP.
Ufotable just finished with their unlimited budget works and I expect them to continue with their beautiful animation. I’m a bit skeptical since God Eater is based on a game, which tend to have weak adaptations (Blazblue, Devil Survivor, Gunslinger Stratos). Hopefully the story and characters can be properly fleshed out, andwe’re not overwhelmed with the game mechanics.
Jitsu wa Watashi wa
While we just finished a vampire based anime (Owari no Seraph), we have another one on the horizon. The main difference though is that Jitsu wa Watashi wa is a comedy and more light hearted. I’m also a fan of of the art style which stands out from other series. While they did it down a bit from the manga, I still think this will be a fun series to watch.
Kangoku Gakuen (Prison School)
Another incredibly hyped up show for the summer season! Prison School seems to be blatant fanservice (which isn’t a bad thing). From the synopsis, it doesn’t tell me much, but I can only assume that this all girls school will be treating the male leads as prisoners, resulting in some racey and funny situations. Some of the characters certainly look intimidating, and I’m curious how JC Staff will handle the adaptation.
Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou
Year of the ecchi indeed. Monster Musume appears to be similar to your other harem ecchi series, but with a twist, all the girls are some kind of monster hybrid! Again, I have no idea what the “plot” of the series is, but I can only assume that it won’t progress much. Instead, we’ll have another series to just sit back and enjoy the humor with.
Going into the season, Overlord is currently a big question mark for me. Madhouse studios has been on a roll lately with Death Parade and Parasyte, which gives me some higher expectations for this series. From the synopsis, it seems have a similar premise to SAO and Log Horizon, where users stay within a game and that becomes their new reality. In Overlord though, the main character is the only human within this world while he has to live with the NPCs.
To LOVE-Ru Darkness 2nd
Love it or hate it, you can’t deny the popularity of the To LOVE-Ru series. We now have 4 anime seasons along with multiple sets of OVAs with no end in sight! It feels like To Love-Ru was a mediocre harem to me with the first season, but by the time darkness rolled around, they really embraced what they really were. No more of that silliness of pretending to have a story, Darkness brings us some of the hardcore fanservice which apparently sells well. While technically there is some “story”, we all know exactly why we’re watching it…
Well that wraps up my Summer 2015 anime preview. A bit late, but I wanted to plan out my summer season regardless. There are definitely a few other shows on my radar but I haven’t had the time to look further into them yet (namely comedy series). What series are you looking forward to the most in the coming weeks?
