Last week was a recap episode, so I had a nice break from writing about Sword Art. I was ready to get back into the groove of things, but there wasn’t much to talk about this week! We basically just have Kirito and friends, going on an adventure in Alfheim.
Kirito has never really had a moment to rest. The series started off being trapped in SAO, then he had to save Asuna from the creepy Sugou, and then stop Death Gun. Now that they’ve finally resolved all of the conflicts, Kirito can actually play a game for the sake of playing a game. He can go around completing quests and having fun with his friends.
I thought it was odd that they would prefer to hang out online rather than in person. Asuna revealed that she’d be leaving back to Kyoto soon. Instead of spending this precious time with her Kirito, why not just play online games with him!? I guess this is more of how their society is in this futuristic world. Virtual reality has become such a major part in their every day lives and has replaced the need for face to face communication.
I wasn’t particularly a fan of this episode. While it was a nice change of pace, but it just felt filler-esque to me. I think it was how they changed gears so quickly that made it feel off for me. We were dealing with with real life crimes, and the grungy world of GGO an episode ago, but now we’re jumping right into a fantasy world.
The episode also felt a bit out of place for me. While the arc has just ended, we suddenly have this episode where Sinon is already a part of the group. She’s jumped from GGO to ALO out of no where, and it feels as if she’s always been a part of their group. I think it would have been nice to see more of how Sinon started playing ALO, rather than just hopping into a mission with everyone. But of course, that’s just my personal preference.
Either way, this is supposed to be a short arc so we might as well enjoy it while it lasts. For the first time, the characters are stress free and can enjoy themselves in a game!
