Black Bullet Episode 13 (End) – Thoughts

Black Bullet was probably one of my most anticipated series going into the season. Unfortunately, there were a lot of things that I wish would have gone differently (but I’ll talk about that later). The last episode just aired and I have to say, it didn’t feel like a season finale to me. They left so many things open (even though the source is ongoing) and the series just abruptly ends. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 12 – Thoughts

Oh boy, a lot of things were covered within this episode. The pacing issues that have plagued the series has my jimmies rustled once again. I thought Pleiades would have played a more significant role yet it was dealt with within mere minutes. There were quite a few casualties, but unfortunately, they didn’t carry much weight since they all occurred behind the scenes. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 11 – Thoughts

After several weeks of set up, we finally get some action. Rentarou’s adjuvant separates from the rest of the squad. While they’re having a field day, the rest of the fodder characters get destroyed by the Gastrea invasion. While I don’t really care for the deaths of those characters, there was something haunting about their squad leader. Just minutes ago, he was making commands to fight against the Gastrea, and now here he is, driven completely mad and lost the will to live. After seeing how helpless they were against Aldebaran, he gives up resisting their inevitable doom. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 10 – Thoughts

I guess I’ll start off by noting the drop in animation quality once again this episode. I found it to be pretty distracting and took away from some of the viewing experience. It was present in a few other episodes, but I don’t think it was as noticeable as this one. I don’t want to criticize it too much though. After the Tina arc, we’ve had a couple of slower paced episodes where high animation budgets weren’t required. Now that the stage has been set though, it seems like the last few episodes will be more action oriented and require that extra animation budget. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 9 – Thoughts

While there wasn’t too much progression in the story, we did get some needed character development in this episode. This episode managed to balance comedy and develop characters’ stories in a more natural way (at least in my opinion). I was a bit nitpicky about how Black Bullet had handled their introductions/explanations of concepts and characters but I was actually impressed with this episode. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 8 – Thoughts

We’ve just concluded the Tina Sprout arc of the series and a new threat has been detected. There isn’t too much I have to say about it since it’s just another Gastrea attack. The Gastrea being the main antagonist feels rather lackluster since they don’t have any personality for us to understand them better. Perhaps there’s more to them aside from being space creatures sent to destroy humanity (conspiracy theories). Until more gets revealed though, I’m finding it difficult to have an interest or any real feeling of threat from them. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 7 – Thoughts

Okay, so last episode actually ended on a “cliffhanger” (it’s in quotations because the OP kind of spoiled a lot). This starts off right after Tina answers Enju’s phone. Tension and suspense is high as we wonder what happened to Enju. As soon as the OP finishes playing, we see that she’s safe and being treated. They did explain what happened on the scene, but all the suspense they had built up kind of fizzles out. (more…)

Spring 2014 Anime Mid Season Impressions

We’re a bit over the half way mark for the spring anime season. I thought that it’s about time to give my rundown of the spring series that I’m currently watching. I’ll be splitting this up into two parts since I’m following 19 new series from the spring season. The season has had a few surprises and let downs so far, but I’d say its an overall improvement to the previous season. Anyways, lets get on to my impressions! (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 6 – Thoughts

The mood of the show shifted pretty quickly after what happened last episode. Everyone’s gone back to their regular lives as if the attack didn’t phase them at all. I enjoyed Rentarou and Tina’s meeting. Her interactions with Rentarou was a form of escape for her. She’s had a rough childhood and is forced to be a soldier. However, when she’s with Rentarou, she’s able to be spoiled and act like a child. She gets to experience what it’s like to be a normal person, even if its only briefly. The second she has to answer the phone call, she’s back to being a “weapon”. (more…)

Black Bullet Episode 5 – Thoughts

The overall mood of this episode was a lot more light-hearted compared to the recent ones. They threw in a couple more explanations on how Rentarou gets his ammo/weapons by bringing Miori into the story. I don’t really think they needed to explain it since I’d assume his employer would provide him with the tools necessary to perform his job. I’m not really complaining though since it gave Kisara some more screen time. Speaking of Kisara, she’s actually seems pretty skilled at combat which makes me wonder why she hasn’t gotten a chance to fight yet. Maybe now that they’ve shown us that she’s capable of using techniques similar to Rentarou, she’ll enter the front lines in the near future. (more…)
